Bangladesh High Commission in Colombo observed the International Mother Language Day on 21 February 2017 in an innovative manner, in association with a number of relevant Sri Lankan partners, including the Ministry of National Co-existence, Dialogue and Official Languages; the Ministry of Cultural Affairs; the University of Visual and Performing Arts; the Sri Lanka Scout Association and the Colombo Municipal Council. On this occasion, a creative public event was held to observe the Day at the local Vihara Maha Devi Park from 0900 hrs to 1130 hrs. Beginning with a modest discussion to share the spirit and significance of the Day in contemporary societies, the key event was an open-air (acrylic) painting on canvass participated mainly by the Sri Lankan and the international students of different ages. Simultaneously, the Sri Lanka Scout Association organized a voluntary blood donation camp at the same place. A noble and novel endeavour as it was, the programme was highly appreciated with a huge number of participants from among the local and international educational institutions, the Colombo-based diplomatic community, the wider youth, society and media as well as the expatriate Bangladeshi community in Sri Lanka and the officers, staff members & their family members of the High Commission. Here are some glimpses of the observance of the Day.
