Bangladesh High Commission in Colombo celebrated the 44th Anniversary of Victory Day of Bangladesh on 16 December 2014 with great enthusiasm and festivity. The morning session of the day-long programme began with the hoisting of the National Flag by the High Commissioner Tarik Ahsan at the chancery in presence of all the officials/staffs of the High Commission and the members of Bangladesh community at the High Commission premises. Messages from the Hon’ble President, the Hon’ble Prime Minister and the Hon’ble State Minister for Foreign Affairs released on the occasion of the Victory Day were read at the outset of the discussion. This followed an open discussion session on the significance of the day, where members of Bangladesh community living in Sri Lanka as well as officers of the Mission took part. In his remarks, the High Commissioner described the great victory day as one of the most glorious day in the history of Bangali people. He paid homage to the memories of the Father of the National Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, freedom fighters and martyrs of the liberation war. He viewed that the victory day is a source of inspiration for the nation that is currently in a struggle for the transforming Bangladesh into a middle income country. The morning session was rounded off with screening of a documentary “The Unsung Ballad” and refreshment.
Later in the evening, the Mission organized an art competition for children on the theme of “victory”. Children of officials of the High Commission and the local community took part in it with great enthusiasm. The winners of the art competition were rewarded with prizes. On the same occasion medals were handed over to the two Sri Lankan winners of the 7th International Children Art Biennale, Bangaldesh-2013 which was held in Dhaka by the High Commissioner.The day-long program concluded with a buffet dinner hosted by the Bangladesh High Commission.
